Law Library

History

The Law Library was established under the Law and Parliamentary Library Act 1873 as a joint-use Law and Parliamentary Library.

In 1889 the collection was divided and the Law Library was established as a separate entity.

The Supreme Court building was opened in 1903 and provided a specially designed chamber to house the Law Library.

In 1987 the Law Library was moved to a purpose built premises in the new annexe of the Supreme Court.

The Branch Library at the Central Law Courts was established in 1982 with the opening of the District Court. The function of this library is to provide a practical working collection to meet the needs of the profession attending the District and Magistrates Courts.

Ownership

The ownership of the Law Library is vested in the Legal Practice Board (formerly the Barristers Board of WA). The Law Library Advisory Committee assists the Board in the management of the Law Library. The Committee is chaired by a Judge of the Supreme Court, currently the Hon. Justice Kenneth Martin.
